Weekend silog brunch and modern Filipino dinners at a Hastings-Sunrise restaurant in Vancouver, with a late happy hour every day.
Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Halina serves a Filipino brunch built around silog, the breakfast plate named for its garlic rice (sinangag) and egg (itlog). The restaurant, at 2439 E Hastings St in Vancouver's Hastings-Sunrise neighbourhood, calls its version Three Stars and a Sun: a choice of beef tapa, sisig, baconchon or fried marinated milkfish with two eggs, garlic rice, atchara (pickled papaya), house salad and a side soup.
The rest of the brunch list stays in the same territory. There is a Filipino-style scrambled egg with toasted pandesal, tortang talong (a grilled eggplant frittata with mushrooms and tofu crumble), pandesal sandwiches, and Inihaw na Liempo and chicken inasal plates with garlic rice. A kids' menu for ages 12 and under offers buttermilk pancakes with eggs and bacon.
Listed on Google as HALINÁ Modern Filipino Kitchen + Bar, the restaurant was started by four friends who first ran a takeout and catering business called Bigboy's Chigs To-Go. Its dinner menu reworks Filipino classics, among them a salmon sinigang in blueberry broth, a braised lamb shank caldereta and Pancit Batil Patong from Tuguegarao, and keeps others close to tradition, such as kare-kare, lechon kawali and crispy pata. The full list is on the restaurant's menu page.
Weekend afternoons have their own happy hour, Tambayan Hour, from 2 to 5 p.m., and it comes back from 8 p.m. to close every evening. The drinks lean on calamansi, ube and pandan, with zero-alcohol options made from house syrups.
On weekdays the restaurant opens for dinner only. Hours are 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Monday to Thursday, 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday, 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday. Reservations go through Toast. The entrance is wheelchair accessible, and a free two-hour community parking lot is at Kamloops Street and Franklin Street. Calls go to 778-504-0970, and the email address is [email protected].
